If you need the cheapest unit for siege engine pushes (or last remaining LDS fodder), here they are. If you want to send them in before they die, press tab and see if the enemy has any cavalry units and you MUST send them in with the charge doctrine for a few trades. Don't expect them to excel as much as demesne pikemen in formation, but just for 30 LDS, they can trade for a surprisingly few models of high-tiered cavalry.
